Does a man who commits unspeakable acts remain human?
The story takes place during an exceptional twenty-four hours. On the morning of 23rd April 1945 a liberation force of the US Army rolls into Flossenburg Concentration Camp in Germany, the scene of untold horrors. Sergeant Sam Curtis is left with a small squad to secure the captured camp in readiness for the arrival of Major J Brooke, a US Army Investigator whose job it is to interview the remaining prisoners. Brooke happens to be Jewish.
Those inmates who remain at the camp speak in hushed and frightened tones about their former Commandant Max Faust, believing him to be a supernatural being. The soldiers put this down to understandable hysteria brought on by the treatment they have endured under the SS but when Max Faust is discovered locked away by his own men, even they begin to wonder. Max is an exceptional character with an uncanny ability to read and affect his interviewers. Is he anything more than a clever, insightful psychopath?
When Max escapes and the killing begins, the Americans question their own judgment and beliefs. The action takes place throughout the night, reaching a crescendo as dawn approaches.

When I picked up this bock, I didn't realise it was a) fiction and b) a vampire story! Frankly, Dracula was enough for me and I haven't managed to get bitten by the vampire bug and I ignore all the trilogies and movies that flood the world. Imagine my surprise when I started what I thought was a World War II account only to find it was about a Nazi concentration camp commandant who had turned vampire. The story was full of dark build- up and obviously centered around the inmates and liberators trying to kill the Nazi beast - no easy job. It was like a TV series episode.
